General Information

Description

Historical overview, com system model, com media, signal digitization, channel characteristics (distortion, noise, SNR, capacity, multipath, Doppler), modulation techniques overview, modems (shift keying, synchronous & asynchronous operation, electrical representations of signals: uni- & bipolar, nrtz, rtz and Manchester code), multiplexing (FDM, TDM, CDM), network protocol structure: topology, ISO-OSI model, switching (circuit, packet), data link layer protocol (flow control & error management). ATM technology.

 

Expectations and Goals

1-          Understanding the basics of communication systems from the data communication point of view.

2-          Get acquaintance of communication channel characteristics and electrical signal representation and modes of signal transmission.

3-          Get acquaintance of modulation, keying, multiplexing and switching techniques.

4-          Get acquaintance of ISO-OSI model and protocol architecture.

5-          Understanding the data link protocols.
