 Abstract

The antibacterial activity of Golden henbane (Hyoscyamus aureus) on several species of bacteria: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was determined. Samples of H. aureus plants were collected from six locations in southern Syria. The extract of roots and leaves of H. aureus were prepared at concentrations of: 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 µg/ml, and tested on bacteria, where their MIC and MBC were determined. Results showed that, MIC and MBC of P.aeruginosa ranged between 100-200 µg/ml and 100-250 µg/ml respectively, while it ranged between 100-300 µg/ml and 150-350 µg/ml for MIC and MBC of S. aureus, and 150-300 µg/ml and 200-350 µg/ml for MIC and MBC of E. coli. The antibacterial activity of H. aureus roots ethanolic extracts was higher than that of leaves in both inhibiting and killing the studied bacteria. A relationship was found between geographical location and antibacterial activity..
