Studying the effects of socioeconomic variables on the adherence to Mediterranean Diet in Syrian population

Abstract

"> The Mediterranean Diet is a healthy diet which protects from many diseases, but many factors could affect the adherence and vary from country to country. The purpose of this study is to assess the adherence to Mediterranean Diet of the sample, then studying the economic and social factors and lifestyle which affect the adherence to Mediterranean diet. The sample was composed of 1000 people (516) women (484) men aged from 18-65 years from all the economic and social levels, they filled a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. we used the SPSS program to study the effects of the variables on MAI. The average MAI of the sample was (1.52±1.87), (1.56±1.91) for women and (1.47±1.83) for men with the absence of statistical differences between men and women, while there were statistical differences between the value of MAI between the three age groups (18-30), (31-50) and (51-65), the lowest MAI belongs to the youth group and the highest to the oldest group as many. The physical activity, smoking and the family history of obesity did not affect the MAI while the economic factors, work, breakfast, eating snacks and eating outside, all has affected the adherence to Mediterranean diet.
