The course covers the major structural lines, the stratigraphic setting, the paleogeographic and tectonic development of the region since Pre-Cambrian to Recent. It deals with studying and analyzing chronologically the lithological and petrographic characteristics of rock formations through the geologic history. The course focuses on the regional correlation of rock formations with special emphasize on their economic significance, particularly on their petroleum potential.
Expectations and Goals
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1- Understand the tectonic evolution of the region and major sedimentary basins.
2- Understand the impact of the tectonic evolution on sedimentary, stratigraphic and paleogeographic setting.
3- Understand the concept of “rock formation” and the suitable conditions for generating and hosting oil and gas.
4- Regionally correlate rock formation.
5- Deduce favorable conditions for forming stratigraphic and structural hydrocarbons traps in the region.
